The definition of perseverance, one might argue, is attempting the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results. By that measure, X is nothing if not perseverant.
The platform formerly known as Twitter announced this week that it is rolling out a video editing hub designed to encourage creators to produce original content directly on the platform, rather than recycling clips from elsewhere. Joe Bier, who oversees product development, said the new tools remain among X's "biggest priorities," with additional updates expected in the coming weeks.
Mr. Bier offered what might charitably be called a philosophical justification for the initiative. "Our team believes this recycled content has a negative impact on the user experience and the business," he said, adding that the platform's algorithm may begin favoring original videos over reposted material — a strategy that Meta has employed with some success on its own properties.
The announcement represents the latest chapter in X's ongoing effort to transform itself into a video-first platform, a campaign that began in earnest in 2024 when Linda Yaccarino, then the chief executive, and the platform's owner, Elon Musk, sought to challenge TikTok and YouTube by introducing original video series and livestreaming capabilities. Those efforts have not, by most accounts, made a notable impact on viewership, brand partnerships, or creator output.
(One might note that "not making a notable impact" is a generous way to describe what happened.)
The new Live Studio and Video Editor features suggest that X has not abandoned its ambitions, even if its ambitions have not yet produced results. Whether creators and brands will embrace tools on a platform that has struggled to retain both remains an open question — though X, to its credit, appears disinclined to let previous disappointments interfere with future announcements.
