The French holding company Publicis Groupe has won the United States media account for Tiffany & Company, the jeweler that has been polishing its image since 1837, along with a broader assignment handling media duties across the Asia-Pacific region for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's parent company.
The account moves represent a significant expansion of the relationship between Publicis and LVMH, the luxury conglomerate that acquired Tiffany in 2021 for approximately $15.8 billion — a price tag that, at the time, made it the largest acquisition in the history of the luxury goods industry.
Publicis Media, the holding company's media arm, will now oversee planning and buying for the Tiffany brand in the United States, a market where the jeweler has maintained its flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan since 1940. (The store, with its famous windows, has appeared in enough films to qualify for its own IMDb page.)
The Asia-Pacific assignment covers LVMH's portfolio more broadly, suggesting that the holding company has persuaded the luxury giant that regional consolidation offers efficiencies that outweigh the risks of putting so many precious eggs in one basket.
Representatives for Publicis and LVMH declined to comment on the billings involved, which is standard practice for luxury accounts, where the clients prefer that the press discuss craftsmanship rather than media expenditures.
The wins come as Publicis, based in Paris, continues to accumulate media assignments from European luxury houses, a category that has historically been skeptical of the holding-company model and its emphasis on scale. That skepticism, it appears, has begun to soften — or at least to soften in proportion to the pressure on marketing budgets.
For Publicis, the Tiffany assignment adds a certain blue-box cachet to a portfolio that already includes considerable heft. Whether the jeweler's famous color will prove as distinctive in a media plan as it does in a shop window remains, as always, a matter for the accountants to determine.
