There was a time, not so long ago, when the phrase "AI-powered advertising" was deployed mainly by technology companies trying to impress investors, and by agencies trying to impress clients who had just read about technology companies trying to impress investors.
Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has decided that era is now over. On Thursday, the social media giant announced what it is calling a complete artificial intelligence creative ecosystem — a collection of tools designed, the company said, to allow "every marketer to cross the AI threshold."
The new offerings include an end-to-end creative solution, which is the kind of phrase that makes procurement departments feel they are getting their money's worth, as well as features aimed at affiliates and creators. (One imagines the threshold in question is less a velvet rope than a loading bar.)
The announcement arrives as Meta continues its effort to position itself as indispensable to advertisers who have grown accustomed to its targeting capabilities but remain uncertain about how much of their creative work should be entrusted to machines. The company, which has been integrating generative AI into its advertising products with increasing urgency over the past year, appears to be betting that the answer is: more than they might think.
For agencies, the tools represent both an opportunity and a familiar anxiety — the same one that has accompanied every labor-saving technology since the halftone screen. Whether the new features will reduce the need for junior talent or simply redirect it toward different tasks remains, as it always does, a matter of some debate in conference rooms on both coasts.
Meta, for its part, seems unbothered by such questions. The threshold, it appears, is open for business.
