There was a time when pharmaceutical advertising to older Americans meant gentle walks on beaches and powerful disclaimers read at auction-house speed. Eli Lilly, it seems, would prefer something more elegiac.
The Indianapolis drugmaker and its agency, Wieden+Kennedy Portland, have released "A Life Covered," a film timed to a regulatory milestone that arrived on July 1: eligible Medicare Part D enrollees may now obtain certain GLP-1 weight-management medications for $50 a month under a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services demonstration called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. Lilly's Zepbound KwikPen and orforglipron, marketed as Foundayo, are among the covered treatments.
The advertisement, directed by Academy Award winners Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley and shot by the cinematographer Linus Sandgren, assembles photographs, household objects and what the industry likes to call "memory artifacts" to trace a lifetime lived with obesity. The score is by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw. (One imagines the production budget did not come from petty cash.)
Lina Polimeni, Lilly's senior vice president and chief marketing officer for consumers, characterized the effort as educational rather than promotional. "This is really a consumer awareness effort focused on patients and specifically, helping seniors understand what may now be available to them," Ms. Polimeni said.
Pierre Jouffray and Derek Szynal, executive creative directors at Wieden+Kennedy, said the creative team drew on "experiences from friends, family, and even personal experiences from people on our team" to depict what they called a shared experience.
The campaign marks Lilly's fourth major obesity initiative with Wieden+Kennedy, a partnership that collected two Bronze Lions in Film at Cannes this year for earlier work titled "Never Over" and "Good Days."
Whether Medicare enrollees will find the film informative or simply affecting remains, as these things do, a matter for the enrollment numbers to eventually settle.
