The holding company that Mark Penn built from the merger of MDC Partners and his digital group has spent the past few years trying to distinguish itself from its larger rivals by emphasizing technology partnerships rather than sheer scale. On Wednesday, that strategy produced its most significant result to date.
Stagwell announced a three-year strategic partnership with ServiceNow, the enterprise AI platform company, in what the holding company described as the largest multi-agency deal in its history. The arrangement will see a consortium of Stagwell agencies — including Code and Theory, 72andSunny, Allison Worldwide, and Movers+Shakers — serve as lead agency partners for ServiceNow, which according to COMvergence spends approximately $120 million annually on media.
In exchange, Stagwell will adopt ServiceNow's AI platform across its own organization, a detail that suggests the partnership is as much about Stagwell modernizing its internal operations as it is about winning a client. (Whether agency holding companies will eventually spend as much on AI subscriptions as they earn from AI-related client work remains an open question.)
Mr. Penn, the Stagwell chief executive who made his name as a pollster before turning to the agency business, called the arrangement "a win-win partnership" and noted that it follows recent technology alliances with Adobe and Palantir. The phrase "go-to-market initiatives" appeared in the announcement, which the release said would "build, activate, and measure marketing campaigns."
For Stagwell, which has positioned itself as the holding company most native to the digital age, the ServiceNow account represents a validation of that positioning — or at least a substantial down payment on it. The company has been assembling these technology partnerships with some regularity now, building a portfolio that looks less like a traditional agency roster and more like a series of joint ventures with the platforms that increasingly define how marketing gets done.
Whether that makes Stagwell the agency of the future or simply a different kind of vendor remains, as these things always do, to be determined by the work.
