In the eternal cola wars, it appears one cannot serve two masters — or at least, one holding company has decided it would rather not try.
Publicis Groupe has won PepsiCo's global media business, a sprawling assignment covering more than 200 markets and brands including Pepsi, Gatorade, and Lay's. The appointment, which PepsiCo confirmed this week, will displace Omnicom's OMD network, which had held the account in the United States and Britain for more than two decades.
But the more striking development may be what Publicis did next: according to people with direct knowledge of the matter, the French holding company withdrew from the ongoing pitch for Coca-Cola's global media business, a review that has been estimated at roughly $4 billion.
(One imagines the conference room in Atlanta grew noticeably quieter.)
The PepsiCo assignment was not the result of a formal pitch, according to people familiar with the process, but rather followed what the company described as a media capabilities review. Publicis had previously handled PepsiCo's media in a string of Asian markets, including China, India, and South Korea, as well as parts of Eastern Europe.
The new arrangement, which PepsiCo is calling "One PepsiCo," will consolidate strategy, planning, activation, and technology under a single model that the company says will be "underpinned by AI and data." A PepsiCo spokesman said the structure would help the company make "smarter marketing decisions" — a phrase that has appeared in approximately every media review announcement since 2019, though perhaps this time it will stick.
Omnicom, for its part, will remain what PepsiCo called a "critical strategic partner" on creative, sports, and public relations work. An Omnicom spokesman declined to comment, which is the holding company equivalent of a tight smile.
The decision leaves Publicis firmly in the Pepsi camp, which is, after all, a camp one can occupy only by leaving the other one behind.
