There is something almost touching about the faith pharmaceutical marketers place in the American football Sunday, that sacred 12-hour stretch when consumers are presumed to be simultaneously sick, watching television, and desperate not to miss a single play.

Reckitt, the British consumer goods giant, is betting on precisely this scenario with a new campaign for Mucinex 12HR Cold & Fever Multi-Symptom, a brand extension that promises, as the name suggests, relief lasting through an entire day of gridiron viewing. The campaign, called "Go All 12," features JoJo Fletcher, the reality television personality who found love and a football-adjacent husband on ABC's "The Bachelorette" a decade ago, along with Anthony McFarland, the former NFL defensive tackle better known by his ESPN nickname, which happens to rhyme with what Mucinex is designed to expel.

(The marketing team, one imagines, could not believe their luck.)

Mr. McFarland's spots, created through a partnership with ESPN and Disney CreativeWorks, feature the analyst dispatching Mr. Mucus, the anthropomorphic glob who has served as the brand's somewhat unsettling mascot for years. "I'm back and feeling better," Mr. McFarland tells the creature, who responds with the wounded dignity of a sideline reporter who has just been told his services are no longer required.

"Booger is a natural partner for us because he helps bring Mucinex into a culturally relevant moment in a way that feels authentic," said Henry Turgoose, Reckitt's vice president of marketing for upper respiratory, deploying three words that account for roughly 40 percent of all contemporary marketing vocabulary.

The campaign extends to TikTok influencers, in-store displays at major retailers, and a DoorDash promotion offering modest discounts through November. Agencies involved include McCann for creative, Stagwell's Hunter for earned media, and Publicis' Zenith for media buying.

Mr. Turgoose noted that the football hook, while timely, reflects a broader truth: people dislike it when their symptoms return before their day ends. This insight, presumably, required research.
