The sports betting industry, which has spent the better part of a decade encouraging Americans to wager on everything from football games to the color of Gatorade poured on winning coaches, has arrived at an interesting juncture: it now wants you to think before you bet.

BetMGM has named Cape, an independent creative agency, as its agency of record, formalizing a relationship that began two years ago. The appointment, which came without a formal pitch process, puts Cape in charge of creative and brand strategy for a brand whose media spending COMvergence estimates at $160 million annually.

The timing is not accidental. The announcement arrives just before the N.F.L. season, when sportsbooks traditionally increase their advertising substantially and when the competition for bettors' attention — and wallets — becomes particularly fierce.

Cape's work for BetMGM has included the "Mullet Over" campaign, which features Jon Hamm and aims to encourage viewers to pause before placing large wagers. (Mr. Hamm, it seems, has found a second act playing characters who suggest moderation, a notable pivot from his years embodying Don Draper's various excesses on "Mad Men.")

AJ Mazza, BetMGM's senior director of brand communications, said Cape would work closely with the brand's broader agency roster to create a unified strategy — language that suggests the independent shop will need to play well with others in what has become an increasingly crowded marketing operation.

For Cape, the formalization represents the kind of graduation that independent agencies dream about: from project work to ongoing retainer, from vendor to partner. Whether the relationship endures will depend, as these things always do, on results that have nothing to do with creativity and everything to do with download numbers and first-time depositors.

Mr. Hamm, meanwhile, continues to collect checks from companies eager to borrow his particular brand of knowing authority. Some habits, it turns out, are harder to break than others.
