The distinction between content and commerce, never particularly sturdy on social media, has grown thinner still.

Instagram announced this week that creators can now transform their livestreams into advertisements while they are still streaming — a feature the Meta-owned platform is calling "boosts" for live video. The company has permitted creators to turn their posts, Stories and Reels into paid promotions for several years, but the ability to do so in real time represents something of a new frontier for the platform.

"You can choose to boost a live video right before you go live, or schedule it in advance," the company said in its announcement, adding that scheduling at least two hours ahead is recommended "to help reduce ad delivery delays." (One imagines the creators who fail to plan ahead, discovering mid-broadcast that their advertisement has not yet become an advertisement.)

The move positions Instagram alongside YouTube, which has spent the past year refining how it serves ads during livestreams, and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, which has been expanding its own live video capabilities under its current ownership. Meta itself has been busy: in March, the company added affiliate brand partnerships and shopping features, followed by a global expansion of live video advertising tools across both Instagram and Facebook.

The timing is not accidental. Industry analysts project the live streaming market will grow from $2.58 billion this year to $5.92 billion by 2030, a trajectory fueled by gaming, live shopping and the continued determination of social platforms to monetize every moment of human attention.

For creators, the feature offers a more streamlined path to promotion than the formal Meta Ads Manager, which has never been accused of excessive simplicity.

Whether audiences will embrace the prospect of watching someone go live while simultaneously being advertised that someone is going live remains, for now, an open question.
