The announcement of a corporate appointment does not usually contain much drama, but then again, most corporate appointments do not involve handing someone the remote control to two of the largest streaming libraries in the entertainment business.

Casey Bloys, who has spent the better part of two decades at HBO and currently serves as chairman and chief executive of content for HBO and Max, has been named to lead streaming content for both Paramount+ and Max under the soon-to-be-combined Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery enterprise. The appointment positions Mr. Bloys as one of the most powerful programming executives in an industry that has been busily consolidating itself into fewer and larger pieces.

Mr. Bloys will succeed Cindy Holland, who has been serving as chair of Paramount's direct-to-consumer business. Ms. Holland, who previously oversaw original programming at Netflix during that company's aggressive expansion years, had also been responsible for Pluto TV, Paramount's free ad-supported streaming service. (The streaming business has developed a fondness for acronyms; FAST, in this case, stands for free ad-supported streaming television, which is what television used to be called before it became something else.)

The financial stakes are considerable. For the first half of 2026, Paramount's direct-to-consumer division generated $1.1 billion in advertising revenue, while Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming advertising brought in somewhere between $610 million and $625 million for the same period. Analysts widely expect the platforms to be combined under a single service, though what that service will be called remains, for now, a question without an answer.

Mr. Bloys has spent his career in the business of prestige programming, a category that HBO more or less invented. Whether prestige scales is a different question.
